New Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Homes Based on Usonian Designs

Lindal Cedar Homes launches the Imagine Series.
Lindal Cedar Homes has launched the Imagine series, a new line of modern homes inspired by the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The homes unite the enduring design principles of Wright’s Usonian houses with current developments in technology, construction and design theory. The venture is a partnership between Lindal Cedar Homes, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the School of Architecture at Taliesin, which has its roots in the Taliesin Fellowship, an apprentice program initiated by Wright.
There are seven designs for new home buyers to choose from. The homes are pre-engineered with premium materials and a lifetime structural warranty. Clients work with a local Lindal representative to finalize the design, and an exterior materials package is shipped by container to the client’s build site for construction, anywhere in the world. Lindal is the first company of its kind to offer Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home designs on this scale.
“The Lindal Imagine series reflects a modern embodiment of Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles,” said Stuart Graff, president and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. “They are sensitive to the attributes of Usonian design while meeting the demands of contemporary living.”
Modern Homes for the Middle Class
There has been a surge of interest in mid-century modern homes for the middle class that are affordable and aesthetically pleasing. The Imagine series meets the lifestyle needs of today’s families while staying true to Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles of harmony, sustainability, and integration with nature. These are unique, thoughtfully designed homes, with spaces for quiet reflection and exuberant celebration.
“We hope the new Imagine series will attract people who want the look and attention to detail found in an architect-designed home, but for less than the cost of a completely custom creation,” said Lindal’s marketing director, Jos Kannin.
Small and Mid-Size Homes with Open Floor Plans and Walls of Glass
Lindal is known for its beautiful, functional homes that accommodate and express the way people live today. The Imagine series of post-and-beam houses ranges from small homes and cottages under 900 square feet to larger homes close to 3,000 square feet. Even the smaller homes feel spacious and are filled with light, thanks to Lindal’s signature walls of glass. The Imagine series homes blend seamlessly with their surroundings, whether in a rural, urban or suburban setting.
Six Key Home Design Principles
The Imagine series shares six design principles with Wright’s original Usonian house plans: They are designed with a flexible, system-built grid, open floor plans, and a strong horizontal emphasis. They are energy efficient and integrated with nature, with window placements and screening features that emphasize the interplay of light and shadow. Homebuyers can work with Lindal’s professional design team to add a finished basement or garage or alter the angle or pitch of the roof.
The Philosophy of “Organic Architecture”
Wright (1867-1959) is widely considered as “America’s greatest architect.” His Usonian home designs are based on a philosophy Wright called ‘organic architecture.’ Usonian homes were crafted using natural materials such as wood and stone, with elements that could be mass-produced for maximum cost-effectiveness, yet custom-tailored to suit the individual needs of every homeowner in order to create, in Wright’s words, “a harmonious place in which to live.”
Frank Lloyd Wright’s First Usonian House
In 1937, the first Usonian home (Jacobs 1) was built by Wright for Herbert Jacobs and his family near Madison, WI. The Imagine series’ Madison home is inspired by this original design. The Madison is a two-bedroom, one-bath, 1,600 square-foot single-story home. It is composed of two wings that wrap around a private back yard. Wright went on to design more than 100 Usonian homes for the urban and suburban middle class. Many of the original homes are still standing and can be toured by visitors.
Professional Home Design Team
The designers for the Imagine series are Aris Georges—who taught at the School of Architecture at Taliesin for many years, and Trina Lindal, a graduate of the School.
“We are beyond excited about this expanded relationship and future opportunities with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and The School of Architecture at Taliesin,” said Christina Lindal, executive vice president of Lindal Cedar Homes. “We could not have asked for a better confluence of history, people, and system to bring these amazing designs back to life.”
