Design Aloud: Frank Lloyd Wright, Exhibition Architect

Please join us as our Design Aloud Series continues with a talk with Barry Bergdoll. Bergdoll is a Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and noted Wright scholar.

Wright was one of the earliest of the innovative modern architects to understand that, in addition to publications, museum and gallery editions could build a reputation, stake out a position, and garner headlines. From his earliest exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, via his stunning display in Rockefeller Center of a new vision of urbanism to be called Broadacre City, to his unveiling of a design for a Mile-High skyscraper in Chicago in 1956, Wright was a master of exhibition tactics. This talk will trace Wright’s evolution as an exhibition architect and the role it played in his complex competition with younger radical architects who followed his lead in crafting their fame not only on the building site but in public displays.

Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. The lecture will be held in the Greatbatch Pavilion Visitor Center, an accessible event space.
