Explore nature, science, engineering, the arts, and architecture at Taliesin West! Each lesson focuses on a new concept, and every activity takes inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, the Sonoran Desert, and our wonderful World Heritage Site, Taliesin West.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is excited to offer eight new sessions along with student favorites.
Registration fees are per student. Each class will be taught outside in a partially shaded area. We recommend dressing for the weather.
All classes meet at the ticket kiosk. A parent/guardian must accompany each student; please reserve a FREE parent/guardian ticket when purchasing your child’s ticket. Students and their families must stay with their Museum Educator during the lesson.
A tour of the historic area of Taliesin West is not included in this program. To purchase tour tickets, please visit our tours page.

Organic Architecture
Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs were all based on the principles of organic architecture. What is that? During this lesson, students will explore this architectural philosophy and learn how the natural world helped inspire some of the world’s most beautiful buildings.

Wright in China
Students will learn how Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by Asian culture. Using the Chinese ceramic vignettes place all around Taliesin West as inspiration, we will learn about perspective and story telling

Windmills
Students will learn about the history of wind power, how architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed a windmill (the Romeo & Juliet windmill at Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin), and then build their own functioning windmill.

In the Wright Light
Students will learn about how Frank Lloyd Wright used light and shadows in his designs. We will also explore the science of light and how it impacts our daily lives.

Furniture
Many architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, designed furniture as well! During this class, we will examine some of Wright’s furniture pieces, learn about other unique types of furniture, and make our own paper “No Waste” furniture model to take home.

Desert Shelters
Designing and building a livable desert shelter was an assignment that Frank Lloyd Wright gave his apprentices. The challenge continued. This session will challenge homeschoolers to design and construct a mini desert shelter – within a budget!

Mystery History
Become a history detective! Students will use photographs and objects from the Taliesin West archives to explore the history of Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter camp and desert laboratory. They will learn how museums use documents and artifacts to tell an exciting and accurate story of the past. We will explore ways they can record their own lives and family history!

Nature Abstractions
Students will learn to look at Nature the way Frank Lloyd Wright did! He challenged the apprentices of Taliesin West to draw nature as simple, geometric shapes. Students will explore the desert around Taliesin West and create a piece of art to take home.

Math Mayhem
Students will learn about the principles involved in designing architectural plans. They will explore the mathematical concepts of scale and how to determine the area and perimeter of a structure.

Building Bridges
Students will be given a tour of Taliesin West and an understanding that Frank Lloyd Wright designed more than 1,100 structures and 40 of them were bridges. The students and the instructor will discuss the difference between architects and engineers and how they use the Engineering Design Process when designing and testing structures. Students, working in their design teams, will be challenged to design, build, test, and revise a model bridge using K’Nex.

Turning Nature Blue
Why are Blueprints Blue? Students will learn about the history of blueprints, and why this artistic photographic process became so important to architecture and to artists! Inspired by Taliesin West, students will create their own cyanotype print to take home, using the same process Frank Lloyd Wright once used.

Sustainable Design (solar energy)
Students will learn about sustainable building practices, passive solar design, and how Frank Lloyd Wright used these techniques at his desert camp, Taliesin West. Then, they will learn about solar power and make a mini green-energy craft.

Desert Masonry – Concrete Creations
Learn about building materials and explore how the apprentices of Taliesin West made the building, using rocks from our own Sonoran Desert! Students will create their own “desert masonry” concrete art piece to take home.

Homeschool Group Tour:
A child-friendly tour can be arranged for your homeschool group! Together with a Museum Educator, your group will explore architectural history, the natural wonders of the Sonoran Desert, and more! You will see many spaces at Taliesin West that visitors of all ages enjoy, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s office and a special movie theatre from 1949 called “The Cabaret.”
