Public Re-Dedication of Hillside Theater
June 8th marks the 157th birthday of Frank Lloyd Wright and the festive re-opening of Hillside Theater at Taliesin after a four-year hiatus. Historic Hillside Theater was a place where Frank Lloyd Wright enjoyed viewing cultural performances in the 1950s and stands today as a place of community and shared appreciation for the arts. After four years of extensive restoration, we are excited to extend an invitation to you to join us for a celebration of the re-opening of Hillside Theater.

Design A Space That’s Wright for You – Virtual Summer Camp Ages 10-15
In this virtual, weeklong youth camp, we will explore how Wright approached the design process in creating his own Taliesin estate. In live two-hour morning sessions, we will look deeply into the architectural details of Wright’s home and studio, using Taliesin as a text for organic principles of design. Students will incorporate what they have learned in our group sessions into a designed space that is (W)right for them. We will guide students through scaled floor plan drawing and model-building techniques, allowing them to design, draw, and build their 3D designs during the hands-on, off-screen afternoon sessions at home.

Architectural Watercolor and Design – Taliesin Summer Camp Ages 10-15
During this summer camp, students will learn techniques for quick and expressive watercolor sketching while exploring the grounds and buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio. They will create art journals, practice observational drawing, experiment with a variety of wet and dry art materials and have time each day to paint and create art. In addition to making and creating art, students will go on nature walks, visit the Frank Loyd Wright estate, and home, and learn about his ideas about architecture and nature. The week will end with an art show of all the students’ work from the week.

Landscape Design and Intro to Organic Architecture – Taliesin Summer CampAges 15-18

Minecraft Done Wright! – Taliesin Summer Camp Ages 10-15
Students will collaborate to build Wright-inspired houses and structures in Minecraft: Education Edition using Wright’s principles of design and living in nature. The hub for this architecture workshop will be the original drafting studio at Taliesin’s Hillside Home School building, where Wright and his apprentices built and created the Broadacre City model themselves. The schedule will blend time spent building in Minecraft with outdoor hikes on the Taliesin property for inspiration and class discussion about sustainable living. Our small class sizes allow us to accompany the students through their individual design processes, building on their individual skills and challenging them to explore beyond. Students will study Wright’s blueprints and photographs of famous houses and projects to translate into Minecraft.
