On behalf of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, we hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. During this unprecedented time in our lives, we are keenly aware of the power of connection. Frank Lloyd Wright’s work and ideas reinforce the importance of connection in our daily lives— connection to nature, design, and each other—inspiring us to live happier and healthier lives.
Connection was also key with Wright’s Fellowship, which was based at Taliesin and Taliesin West, and was symbolized by the Whirling Arrow – a symbol that could be represented by clasped hands which shows strength through partnership with each other and also shows us capable of changing the world – just as Wright’s work did.
A week ago, we made the very difficult, yet responsible, decision to close both Taliesin and Taliesin West. This has deeply impacted our ability to keep Wright’s legacy alive. March is normally our busiest time of year, with visitors from around the world pilgrimaging up the hill to experience Wright’s winter home and desert laboratory. The revenue we generate from these tours keeps us in business the rest of the year, helping us to advance our mission and preserve and share Wright’s homes to inspire through an understanding and experience of his ideas, architecture, and design.
As the CEO, I also had to make the hardest decision a leader has to make as we furloughed almost half of our dedicated staff. Further cuts may also be necessary. Many still working have taken pay cuts of 25% and are willing to do as much as possible to support the Foundation and each other through this crisis.
We know this is a difficult time for everyone, but we need to ask for your support. Any donation, large or small, will help us stay afloat until we can assess the situation and rebuild. Will you please offer your support today?
When we get through this crisis, and we will, we will all need to find ways to reconnect and deepen those connections with the world around us. We believe that Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy can be a shining light for finding that path forward, and helping each other to live happier and healthier lives. For now, we are grateful to be connected with you, and for your support during this very difficult time for all.
Stay safe. Keep life beautiful. And take care of each other.
